Why resolution should not decide the purchase

“12K”, “14K” and “16K” describe total panel pixel counts, not the complete printing system. A larger 16K panel can have a similar physical pixel size to a smaller lower-resolution panel. Visible miniature quality also depends on pixel dimensions, optics, light uniformity, exposure calibration, layer height, orientation, anti-aliasing, resin behaviour, supports, washing and curing.

For painted tabletop models, a reliable exposure and fewer damaged supports can be worth more than a theoretical resolution difference that is difficult to see after priming.

Choose plate size before headline resolution

Measure representative supported models in your slicer and test realistic plate layouts. A printer that fits twelve of your usual models may be more valuable than a larger machine that fits eighteen if you seldom need more than twelve. Oversized vats also require more resin to operate comfortably and typically use larger films and screens.

Budget for the complete setup

The printer is only part of the initial investment. Depending on your existing workspace, include washing and curing equipment, ventilation or containment appropriate to the product guidance, PPE, resin, replacement film, cleaning supplies, tools and safe storage. Do not calculate payback from maximum advertised speed multiplied by a full plate every day. Use realistic sales, measured profit per unit and practical utilisation. Does 16K automatically beat 12K?

No. Compare physical pixel size and the complete workflow. Calibration, supports, resin and post-processing can matter more than panel pixel count.

Should a beginner buy a large printer?
