Best resin for miniatures: choose for use, not hype.

The sharpest-looking resin is not automatically the best resin for a gaming model. The useful choice balances detail, brittleness, handling, price and how reliably it prints on your machine.

Short answer

For tabletop miniatures that will be handled, transported and occasionally dropped, start with a reputable ABS-like or balanced tough resin. Choose standard/detail resin for display pieces where crispness and low cost matter more than impact resistance. Use flexible resin mainly as a blend or for parts that genuinely need flex.

Gaming miniatures

Use ABS-like or tough resin. Spears, swords, ankles and banners benefit more from durability than from a theoretical detail advantage that may not be visible after priming and painting.

Display miniatures and busts

Standard or detail-focused resin is sensible when the model will live on a shelf. Calibrated exposure and careful support placement usually matter more than the marketing resolution printed on the bottle.

Models sold by post

Prioritise toughness and validate packaging with real drop tests. A cheaper brittle resin can become the expensive option after reprints, replacements and unhappy customers.

High-volume print farms

Measure successful output, not bottle price alone. A resin that costs slightly more but reduces failures, support breakage or cleanup time can produce a lower true cost per shipped model.

Compare true cost, not bottle price

A £20 bottle is not automatically cheaper than a £25 bottle. Failed plates and broken models change the result. Compare:

How to test a new resin properly

  1. Read the manufacturer’s current safety data and printer guidance.
  2. Start with a small calibration print at the layer height you actually use.
  3. Print a representative model containing thin weapons, supports and surface detail.
  4. Wash and cure consistently; over-curing can distort your comparison.
  5. Record failures and breakages across several plates, not one lucky print.

Detail depends on more than the bottle

Printer XY resolution is only one part of visible quality. Exposure, light uniformity, layer height, orientation, anti-aliasing, support contact points, resin temperature, washing and curing all affect the final surface. A well-calibrated mainstream resin can outperform a premium resin used with poor settings.

Safety and disposal

Uncured photopolymer resin requires careful handling. Follow the product safety data, use suitable gloves and eye protection, control spills, provide appropriate ventilation, and do not pour contaminated wash liquid down the drain. “Water-washable” describes the cleaning medium; it does not make uncured resin or contaminated water harmless.

What type of resin is best for gaming miniatures?

ABS-like or a balanced tough resin is the safest general starting point because gaming pieces are handled and transported. Test thin parts before committing to a full army.

Does expensive resin always produce more detail?

No. The printer, exposure calibration, layer height, orientation and post-processing may make a larger difference than bottle price.

Should I mix flexible resin into standard resin?

Some makers do, but a mixture creates a new material with unverified settings and properties. Record the ratio, recalibrate exposure and test before production.

Is water-washable resin safer?

Not inherently. Treat uncured resin and contaminated wash water as directed by the safety documentation and local disposal requirements.
